New Innovation in Netbook GPUs: The NVidia 9M
Hey guys, Icarus here!
I just got some really interesting news today.
You know how we talk about and, some of us, drool over having SLI or CrossFire configured in our desktops? I know I do.
Never heard of having SLI in netbooks right?
Well, today’s announcement by NVidia will change all of that.
Today, NVidia announced their new 9M series GPUs for netbooks, which allows Hybrid SLI in netbooks!
That’s CRAZY!
That means, in future netbooks with NVidia 9M series GPUs, you have:
- two GPUs, one lower-power and one high-performance GPU
- the graphics power of Hybrid SLI
- the capabilities of all of the NVidia Forceware i.e. GeForce Boost and Hybrid Power
- Intel’s Pinetrail GPUs
You get all of that, and much, much more, all in a small, portable netbook!
I mean, that’s just crazy. That’s like having a desktop you can carry around with you. Literally.
With this much power, there’s not much that you can’t do on a netbook:
- media editing
- video encoding
- hardcore gaming
- watch HD movies
The list is endless. The possibilities are endless.
Now, when is NVidia debuting the 9M series of GPUs?
Well, I’m guessing they’re going to include the 9M series into their netbook platform, the NVidia ION as soon as their platform becomes more and more mainstream.
And when Intel debuts their Pinetrail series of netbook GPUs, the potential of the NVidia ION platform is infinite; limitless, to say the least.
Well, that’s all for today! Hope you guys enjoyed it, and hope this helps!

AMD’s Ultrathin Platform: Retaliation
Hey guys, Icarus here!
So I’ve talked a bit about NVidia’s ION platform, which mainly focuses on graphics performance on netbooks. So, I thought I’d talk a bit about other platforms.
Today, AMD came out with a retaliation tactic with their Ultrathin Platform.
Yes, the name is self-explanatory; the platform is solely for netbooks.
In this platform you have:
- AMD Turion Neo X2 processor
- AMD Radeon 3200 GPU
By the way, the Radeon 3200 GPU is what vendors include in their larger laptops, so putting in a GPU like that into the netbooks is quite impressive.
With this, AMD plans to retaliate against two platforms:
- Intel’s CULV netbook Platform
- NVidia’s ION Platform
Now, neither platforms have been released into the mainstream market yet, so no one really knows which one is the best.
These platforms concentrate on giving more graphics performance while lowering power consumption and increasing battery life.
With their new platform, AMD claims that its graphics performance is 77% faster than Intel’s platform and with the raw processor speed, 44% faster than Intel’s platform.
Now those are significant statements there. 77% and 44% are some huge percentages when it comes to performance, and I hope that AMD’s platform can perform up to par to their statements.
Anyways, that’s all for this post! Hope you guys enjoyed it!

NVidia ION Becomes(ing) Mainstream
Hey guys, Icarus here!
In the last few days, there’ve been a lot of buzz about NVidia’s ION graphics for netbooks.
NVidia’s ION platform consists of NVidia’s 9400M netbook GPU and Intel’s Atom netbook CPU. The platform is solely for netbooks.
What’s amazing about this platform is that it’s the same platform as Apple’s Macbooks.
Yes, you heard right, they’re the same! This means that Intel netbooks and laptops will have an equally good chance of being just as high-quality machines as Apple’s Macbooks.
Before the NVidia ION platform, PC netbooks and laptops just didn’t cut it when they went against Apple’s Macbooks; the quality and hardware superiority of Apple’s Macbooks just rolled over PC netbooks and laptops like…
A tank rolling over a brick wall, you could say.
But anyways, the point is, Apple Macbooks just outperformed PC laptops and netbooks in every possible way. Except for price.
But now, with the power of NVidia’s ION platform, both types of netbooks/laptops are on equal ground. So now it’s up to the vendors to make the difference.
For those of you thinking about buying a PC laptop/netbook soon, here’re some models to think about:
- Samsung N510, coming out some time in September
- Lenovo IdeaPad S12, coming out around when Windows 7 comes out
- HP Mini311, coming out some time in September
I am pretty sure that there’re other models coming out along with these three, but these are the ones I’ve heard about the most.
So, a question to you guys: how well do you think the NVidia ION platform will perform against Apple’s Macbooks?
Anyways, that’s all for this post! Hope you guys enjoyed it!

NVidia-Branded Netbooks? Blasphemy!
Hey guys, Icarus here!
In this post I’m going to be talking about a rumor that’s been going around about NVidia’s plans with Tegra-based netbooks.
So, recently NVidia made a clear point that they will not be making Tegra-based mini-laptops under its own logo and name.
However, I’ve heard rumors that say the complete opposite: they have created a prototype mini-laptop code-named the Firefly.
Who knew NVidia would expand so much in the last few years? First they start out with great GPUs, then they try to invade the CPU territory, and now they’re getting into netbooks!
This is probably a part of their marketing strategy against Intel, because Intel has already released information about their own mini-laptops and netbooks under their name.
I’ve also heard rumors that if NVidia keeps going with its Firefly design, they will release netbooks as early as September. How long have you been working on this NVidia? What a surprise!
Anyways, that’s all for this post! Hope you enjoyed it!
